b1-67er: I like his brain surgery vs rocket science answer. Except I'd say rocket science is harder because they kill more people than bran surgeons do. About 3-4 percent vs 1-2 percent.

Dr. ENT: That was pretty interesting. . . Except the part that neurosurgery is "harder" than rocket science. The truth is that neurosurgery is still very crude because the brain is still a pretty amorphous black box to us. The edges between tumor and non tumor, speaking areas vs non speaking area, etc. are ill defined. Most neurosurgical procedures for tumor are "debulking" procedures. I heard a neurosurgeon interviewed on NPR radio a while back who stated that certain surgeries on the eye are much more precise and detailed and difficult. Just his opinion as a neurosurgeon.
